چکیده

Based on an analysis of all low resolution spectra of HD 89353 (HR 4049) obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) over several years and uniformly reprocessed, we report on large ultraviolet variations for this star whose amplitude increases towards long wavelengths. Ultraviolet maximum and minimum occur respectively at phase 0.52 and 0.92 of Waelkens et al. (1991) ephemeris which suggests that ultraviolet and optical variations occur in phase. The ultraviolet energy distribution of HD 89353 is very deficient compared to that of the standard A6Ib star, HD 80404, and compared to the predictions of an ATLAS 9 model (Teff = 7500K, logg = 2.0 and [M/H]= -5.0) which bests fit the optical continuum. The ultraviolet flux deficiency scales as λ−1, a trend already noted earlier (Waelkens et al. 1995). The most likely interpretation is that variable circumstellar extinction drives the ultraviolet and optical variations as proposed by Waelkens et al. (1991).

Time resolved spectroscopy of the post - AGB star HD 56126

We have investigated the report of Tamura and Takeuti that the Hα line of the F-type post-AGB star HD 56126 is variable on time scales of minutes. To this end, HD 56126 was observed on two occasions with the William Herschel Telescope. Seventeen, respectively thirty spectra were taken within time span of 1.5 hours in order to detect any short term variations. We find that the Hα line profile ch...

The Dying-wind around Hd 56126, a Post-agb Carbon Star

We have used the Keck I telescope to resolve at mid-infrared wavelengths the dust emission from HD 56126 (IRAS 07134+1005), a post-Asymptotic Giant Branch carbon star with a detached dust shell. The gross morphology of the image can be explained by a strong wind which started to die about 1500 years ago. If the star had an effective temperature, T∗, near 2600 K when it was losing ∼3 × 10 M⊙ yr ...

The ultraviolet spectrum of the peculiar post - AGB star HD 101584

The high-resolution (R ≈ 10) nearultraviolet IUE spectrum of the peculiar post Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) supergiant HD 101584 (F0Iape) has been analyzed. In the wavelength range between 2500 and 3000 Å, 291 out of 332 absorption features are identified. The main contribution comes from FeII, CrII and MnII. Most of the absorption features are blends from several absorption lines. This i...

A study on the nature of the peculiar supergiant HD 101584 ⋆

We present a study of lowand high-resolution ultraviolet, high-resolution optical CAT/CES spectra and ultraviolet, optical and infrared photometry of the peculiar supergiant HD 101584. From the photometry we learn that the ultraviolet and optical energy distribution cannot be fitted in a consistent way and we need a model in which the UV and optical energy distribution are formed by different g...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Atomic carbon has been detected in the envelopes of three carbon-rich evolved stars: HD 44179 (=AFGL 915, the 'Red Rectangle'); HD 56126; and, tentatively, the carbon star V Hya. This brings to seven the number of evolved star envelopes in which CI has been detected. Upper limits were found for several other stars, including R CrB. CI was not detected in sever...
